Sydenham’s Biodiversity Team had a fantastic 1st year removing invasive species and planting trees.  Pictures are of the October Buckthorn Blast which removed over 250 buckthorns and the planting white spruce and a variety of native deciduous trees and shrubs.   2026 initiatives will include more invasive species pull parties, tarping of periwinkle and lily of the valley, more extensive tree planting and training for interested parties.

The Bruce Trail Side Road 15 reroute was opened in November 2025. Six work parties of Sydenham volunteers cleared a new path through a kilometre of fallen trees along the unopened road allowance. They also built a new bridge over a lovely stream on a generous landowner’s property. The reroute removed 5 kilometres of road walking for our Sydenham hikers.

We celebrated Bruce Trail Day 2025 on October 5 in Harrison Park, under warm sunny skies.  Thanks to our hike leaders Jeannine, Carol, Fran, and Anne who led hikes, and also to our other volunteers in the event tent, where we enjoyed a lot of excellent conversations with folks passing by, about the Trail, our hiking program, and our BTC mission.

Welcome to our new members who signed up at our event tent, and thanks to the Greenbelt Foundation who celebrated their 20th Anniversary by partnering with us and donating BTC Reference Guidebooks to those new members.

What a great weekend for completing this year’s E2E. Hikers enjoyed blue skies and, unexpectedly for October, soaring high temperatures. Over 40 hikers were presented with their E2E badges on their final day in Wiarton, with Georgian Bay and the escarpment in the background. Many volunteers ensured the wellbeing of hikers with encouragement, snacks and water at checkpoints located along the trail. Special thanks goes out to Bill Snel and Franziska Edney for organizing this big event.

Our 2025 Spring Social on April 27 was a bright sunny day in Massie.  We met at the Massie Hall, and then enjoyed 3 hikes nearby, including a photography / history hike led by Don Sankey, an ecology hike with Bob Knapp, and a nature apps hike with Fran Turner.  It was great to have some newly-joined members participating, and the potluck dinner afterwards was delicious!
